The city of Fairbanks intends to begin removing snow on downtown’s cross streets on Monday night, February 5th. Keep pushing your snow or hard pack off the curb, which more downtown businesses and owners are doing this year than last. Good job.
It took a petition to get a focus on downtown, but in the subsequent meeting with the mayor there was recognition that downtown’s daily mix of uses and users warrants a higher level of service than it is getting. The mayor and his staff acknowledged shortcomings with this year’s snow removal effort.
The city will propose standards for maintenance downtown to meet a higher level of service. And the effort to revitalize downtown through the delivery of basic services will continue.
