"Vision Fairbanks" Public Workshop 4 - THE RESULTS
After a year of visioning through public input with over 2000 people submitting their thoughts and
dreams for a vibrant, revitalized downtown, 475 people showed up on August 29, 2007 to see the
unveiling of the conceptual plan for downtown Fairbanks.
Embracing and incorporating only those elements that received majority vote by the community, the
plan focuses on restoring our local serving retail, bringing back the vitality to our downtown through
both civic and youth activities while preserving the integrity and beauty of our natural surroundings.
We still need your vote, thoughts and input - the next steps for this plan is to have final endorsement
and adoption at both the Borough and City levels and it is critical that your voice is heard - does this
plan embrace your thoughts for downtown Fairbanks? If this plan were implemented, would this be
a downtown that you would want to shop, live and work in - would your children consider growing
old in and your grandchildren proudly call the greatest community on earth.
NEXT STEP:
What are your thoughts on:
Celebrating Chena River through waterfront enhancements yet retaining natural green
space and trails for all to enjoy it's natural beauty? Specifically, what do you think of the
Outfitters, Festival Lawn, and integrated trails and bike paths?
Taking an active stance on supporting growth in our downtown through retail supporting
policies?
Creating a key focal street for all to visit - Cushman becoming a 2-way, retail signature
street, marked by roundabouts at either end? What about tree lined streets that unveil to a
retail hotspot yet provide a natural setting for an indoor, year-round botannical garden.
Enhancing a multi-modal circulation system that includes off-street bike and pedestrian
pathways? Protected weatherproof environments in our downtown - arcades that open in
summer but are warm and toasty in winter?
What would you think of a green, connected Civic Forest that includes a skate park, skate
center along with a convention center and performing arts center
Having a Streetcar run along Cushman that connects the railroad depot to downtown and
the airport?
Creating a public square for all to enjoy, in the heart of a brand new retail "hotspot" - a
celebration of our community and gathering place?
Please learn about these concepts, ask questions and get involved - this is everyone's community
and it is only by working together that we will be able to accomplish our collective dreams.
