"Vision Fairbanks" Comprehensive Downtown Plan
Next Step
Do these concepts embrace your thoughts of a vibrant downtown for our community?
The year 2007 marked the start of an incredible journey for our community as we commenced the
development of a comprehensive plan to revitalize our downtown. As we embark on this process
for the heart of our city, we need your help.
To date over 1,500 people have attended one of the Vision Fairbanks Public Workshops to give
their input into this process and a further 500 have submitted their thoughts and dreams online or
in person. Translating all the feedback and input into a comprehensive and viable plan for the
future of our downtown, Crandall Arambula, the planning team helping us in this process, have
refined those concepts that we, as a community have approved to date.
Please take a look at these refinements and design alternatives and give your input - ask about the
ideas, get involved and take this opportunity to have your say in the future your downtown.
What are your thoughts on these comprehensive revitalization concepts:
Celebrating the beauty of the Chena River through waterfront enhancements while retaining
natural green space and trails for all to enjoy?
Creating a key focal street for all to visit - Cushman becoming a 2-way, retail signature street,
marked by roundabouts at either end? How about weather proofing using arcades that open
during summer and close during winter?
Enhancing a multi-modal circulation system that includes off-street bike and pedestrian pathways?
Having a streetcar run along Cushman connecting the railroad depot to downtown and the airport?
Creating a new urban housing district just north of the river, with streetcar and walking connection
over Cushman bridge to the downtown core?
Creating a public square for all to enjoy in the heart of a brand new retail "hot spot", serving as a
celebration square and community gathering place?
Having a civic forest mark the start of the entry to Downtown (beginning at the corner of Airport and
Cushman) that encompasses a convention center, performing arts center, skate park, and
enclosed botanical garden?
Creating a mixed-use Class A commercial office district next to the new parking garage?
Promoting healthy retail through supportive policies on a borough-wide level?
