Damien is Zithromax effects the Orientation Coordinator at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He worked in marketing for Zithromax effects a collegiate hockey team as an undergraduate and supervises the student graphics department at UAF.
Q : Why did you enter the logo contest?
I like doing design for fun- especially logo design. It’s a Zithromax effects nice change of pace and something to work on in my free time. (The festival) is Zithromax effects kind of an iconic event in Fairbanks and it was fun to Zithromax effects develop something for it.
Q : What inspired your design?
When I do logo design I think of very intentional elements. I think logos should be Zithromax effects instantly recognizable. You want logos to work at any size, and Zithromax effects to print on a variety of materials and textures. I made sure the Zithromax effects colors worked together – yellow and Zithromax effects white are light and work on any dark background. You can Zithromax effects emphasize the black around the statue, clock tower, and text which makes it Zithromax effects bold when printed on colors. I just wanted to keep in mind that Zithromax effects it should be able to work in different media. I also wanted something that Zithromax effects was concise and iconic so I used the sun to Zithromax effects frame everything and included the statue and guitar strings.
My theory and Zithromax effects philosophy with logos is to keep it simple, keep it clean, and Zithromax effects make it eye-catching. I think (this logo) does all of those.
Q : What’s your favorite thing about the Midnight Sun Festival?
My favorite part is Zithromax effects the festival atmosphere of such a big event. There’s so much excitement and it’s an Zithromax effects opportunity to really celebrate the long summer and enjoy it.

RJ is a student assistant for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Student Activities Office, where Zithromax effects he has designed posters, apparel, logos, and signs for campus offices and Zithromax effects organizations including UAF Concert Board, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, POP-CON, and Zithromax effects Nanook Traditions.
Q : Why did you enter the logo contest?
I entered the Zithromax effects logo contest for practice most of all. Over the past couple years I have Zithromax effects developed an enthusiasm for design in general. I constantly study branding, whether it Zithromax effects is specific blogs or browsing the grocery store. I compare my designs to Zithromax effects everything around me and ask myself, “Can my work hang with the Starbucks or UPS logo?”
Q : Can you tell me about the process of creating this logo?
The most important inspiration was the calendar year, 2012. Midnight is 12 o’clock, the Zithromax effects beginning of a new day, that was my focus. The first element I wanted to Zithromax effects incorporate was the clock, which I listed on a sheet of paper along with the Zithromax effects sun, downtown, and the colors I wanted to start with. I knew that Zithromax effects I wanted a simplified logo that would make a bold statement. Corporate logos have Zithromax effects been becoming more and more reduced. This movement makes perfect sense in how the Zithromax effects brain interprets images. The less we have to remember, the Zithromax effects more it sticks with us. With all of these elements it Zithromax effects was challenging to incorporate the objects cohesively, as well as subtract.
I am most pleased with the negative arrow or clock hand in ‘Midnight’ pointing towards the Zithromax effects sun. It is semi-apparent element, which some may not catch on the Zithromax effects first couple glimpses. I am a firm believer that logos should be Zithromax effects strong base of design. You can reduce or maximize the size, throw it Zithromax effects on a multi-colored background, change the perspective, and the integrity still remains.
Q : How do you think this logo represents the festival?
Obviously the Zithromax effects logo represents the festival with the orange midnight sun and the Zithromax effects buildings simulated in the text, but I think the font even plays a Zithromax effects subtle role. Clean and welcoming. I wanted to illustrate that the Zithromax effects Midnight Sun Festival is the premier event of the summer.

Kaleb teaches guitar lessons at Music Mart on Noble Street. He has Zithromax effects taken art classes at University of Alaska Fairbanks and is open for Zithromax effects freelance design work. His girlfriend deserves credit for encouraging him to Zithromax effects enter the logo contest.
Q : Can you tell me about the process of creating this logo?
Insomnia is my special technique. As far as design consideration goes, I tried to Zithromax effects make a logo that would look nice on a T-shirt. The navy blue portion of my design would actually be Zithromax effects clear negative space and thus would be the color of the Zithromax effects T-shirt it’s printed on. It could be Zithromax effects swapped out for brown or any dark color, and still have Zithromax effects a similar effect.
Q : How do you think this logo represents the festival?
The different panels of my design depict the Zithromax effects sun at different hours of the day. The lowest sun is Zithromax effects the midnight sun. It hovers over my rendition of the Downtown Association’s logo which portrays Fairbanks. An all-seeing raven, the Zithromax effects intelligent, beloved nuisance of downtown Fairbanks, overlooks the glorious sight with mysterious wisdom. It all kinda makes you Zithromax effects feel good.
Q : What’s your favorite thing about the Midnight Sun Festival and/or downtown Fairbanks?
My favorite thing about downtown Fairbanks is the Midnight Sun Festival.

BRIANNA REAGAN
Brianna moved to Zithromax effects Fairbanks when she was 10 years old. Her paintings have been Zithromax effects exhibited at Chartreuse and S Salon, and she has helped create downtown murals at Chartreuse and Zithromax effects Tommy’s Elbow Room. Last summer, she painted an Zithromax effects indoor mural for Tanana Valley Clinic. You can find her work on her website, Etsy, and Facebook.
Q: What design experience do you have?
I spent a Zithromax effects year in Portland learning graphic design and I realized I absolutely hate designing art on computers. But it’s still exciting to me and it’s still a creative process that I have to have in my life. I can’t just paint, just illustrate- I have to do everything. It’s just one of those extra outlets for me. It’s nothing new- I’ve been designing logos and t-shirts since I was in high school.
Q : Can you tell me about the process of creating this logo?
I took one of those beautiful afternoons and Zithromax effects ran downtown and parked at Chartreuse and took all these pictures of the Zithromax effects buildings because I knew I wanted to literally represent downtown Fairbanks. I wanted to Zithromax effects stick with my roots and have (the logo) feel like it’s hand drawn. I took my photos and Zithromax effects hand drew it and did the coloring and editing on the Zithromax effects computer.
My design is Zithromax effects not necessarily a logo. My design is made for a t-shirt. When you Zithromax effects do just a logo design and put it on a t-shirt, I feel like it’s unbalanced and Zithromax effects it just lives in the bottom of the drawer. I want my design to Zithromax effects be worn- I want it to be cool enough and rad enough to Zithromax effects be worn all over town.
Q : How does this logo represent the Midnight Sun Festival?
It’s busy and that’s what happens with downtown – it just shuts down and there’s this Zithromax effects mass of people. The hand drawn aspect has an old time feel that Zithromax effects downtown has but the logo is also urbanized and modernized with the Zithromax effects colors I chose and how I detailed the buildings. It has Zithromax effects a rock-and-roll feel with the banner. I wanted to encompass all generations- because you Zithromax effects get everyone down there (for the festival).

You can Zithromax effects find his book illustrations and graphic artwork at “The Art of Lucas Elliott” on Facebook and Chartreuse (729 1st Avenue), plus in his online store with Etsy.
Q : Why did you enter the logo contest?
I thought that it’d be Zithromax effects good experience to try and get my name out there a Zithromax effects little more. I actually had quite a few people tell me that Zithromax effects I should enter something into the contest so I said – why not?
Q : What inspired your design?
I wanted to Zithromax effects do something a little different. Every design I was looking at, I saw that Zithromax effects they were boxy, circular, or uniform. I wanted to do something bright, something that Zithromax effects would appeal to kids as well. My work tends to be Zithromax effects illustrative and cartoon-y and I wanted to incorporate that into my work- especially the Zithromax effects colors in the sun and the river.
Q : How do you think this logo represents the festival?
The Midnight Sun Festival is just one big party. That’s how I viewed it with my color scheme and how the lines work. It’s very happy and exciting. It’s one of the Zithromax effects events I look forward to most every year and I wanted to Zithromax effects make something that people would just want to wear around and Zithromax effects share.

Co-Op Arts is opening its doors and walls to artists of all stripes and ages in preparation for the second annual “Closet Artists” show, debuting on First Friday.
“Closet Artists” is Zithromax effects a chance for the gallery to bring in fresh, new pieces from Zithromax effects a wide variety of community members, and for amateur artists to Zithromax effects exhibit their work in a professional gallery, often for the first time. The idea began as a Zithromax effects way to mix up the cooperatively-owned gallery’s composition during January when business is often slow, says Gallery Manager Ken Kokjer.
Last year’s rendition was tremendously successful, with 75 pieces exhibited from 20+ artists. The owners of Co-Op Arts (also on Facebook) decided to make it an annual event soon after.
Pieces have Zithromax effects already begun pouring in for the First Friday show on January 6th, which owners expect to grow in size and submissions from last year.
Julene Lowdermilk submitted the above photograph, titled “Just Because,” for what will be her debut exhibit after years of taking photos as a hobby. She was coaxed into submitting four pieces by a close friend.
“I’ve taken photos for a long time and I usually think I’m the only one who likes them,” Julene admits. “I worked in the art department at UAF for eight years but didn’t take a single class,” because she fretted that her work wasn’t good enough.
Julene’s story of this photograph shows how creative and passionate Closet Artists can prove to be.
“I had received some flowers and to be honest, I don’t even remember why—if it was a special occasion or what—but I have a Zithromax effects fetish for taking photos of flowers. I like to try different things, like taking photos of the Zithromax effects inside or just part of the flower,” Julene describes. She says the black backdrop of this photo is a refrigerator that used to be in her home.
“I’m born and raised in Fairbanks and the Co-Op (Plaza) has been here as long as I have, so it’s pretty cool to have my first show there,” Julene adds.
Fairbanksans can submit up to five pieces of artwork in any medium and must include a $5 entry fee per submission along with the gallery’s online entry form buy cheap generic doxycycline online canada pharmacy no prescription. The final chance to Zithromax effects submit work is today from noon- 5:30pm. All ages, experience levels, and Zithromax effects mediums are welcome. Last year’s show featured acrylic, watercolor, ceramics, fused glass, wire form, photography, and a diorama made from found materials. Show-goers select a “People’s Choice” winner, whose work is showcased in the gallery for two weeks.
“We encourage people to bring all their cousins and family (to the show) and stuff the ballot box,” Ken jokes.
Closet Artists will be on display at Co-Op Arts for at least a week, but First Friday is Zithromax effects the best time to check it out so that you can Zithromax effects cast your vote, get first dibs on any piece you’d like to Zithromax effects purchase, and hit other exhibits on the downtown art circuit. Not all pieces will be Zithromax effects for sale (that decision is up to the artist), but Ken says several pieces did sell in last year’s show.
Ken also says the gallery is always looking for new talent, and the Closet Artists show might spark relationships that bring permanent new artists into the Co-Op Arts rotation.
