APLIC features Barbara Gabel at First Friday art exhibit

share on:

Barbara Gabel, a local acrylic and oil painter, is the featured First Friday artist at the Alaska Public Lands Information Center (inside the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center) for September 1.

Gabel first came to Alaska in the early 1970’s and it was here she found her home. According to Gabel, she had never seen such a beautiful country and there was a perfect scene for painting wherever she went. She couldn’t get enough of being here, exploring every inch of the state, going back to the same place at different seasons, rain or shine. Each time it’s always different.

“After I came back to Alaska in 2007, I started painting again. It’s one of the main reasons I had to come back home,” she said. “I paint mostly on canvas with acrylics. The fast drying acrylics were the only thing that would keep up with me,” she added.

Gabel’s hope is to stir conversation and spark a feeling of adventure in people when they view her art. Each piece is an original. Gabel believes art is an opportunity to share the beauty of Alaska with the world.
