2 Street Gallery presents Marianne Stoltz, a traditional wood carver. Marianne was born and raised in Germany. After receiving a journneyman woodcarver license from the Wood Carving School Berchdesgarden, Germany, she has been working as an independent artist. She made Fairbanks her permanent home in the 90’s, where she has since been carving, teaching at the Folkschool Fairbanks and raising a family, a garden and goats.
Marianne’s description of her work:
I am foremost a traditional woodcarver, using preferably local wood and traditional carving techniques, namely chisels and elbow grease.
The subjects I choose for my art pieces reflect my surroundings: the natural world and the humans in it. I like to capture the constant change and the beauty within it.
Working with the natural flaws and challenges of wood rather than against them is a major part of my inspiration.
