Missed Opportunity at The Mecca. It is obvious now that a reasoned discussion about the daily crowd in front of the Mecca – or public safety downtown – is not possible in the context of a protested liquor license. The Council’s meeting to reconsider its protest of the Mecca’s license climaxed in the first five minutes when Councilmember Lonny Marney asked the Mecca’s owner if she would work with the city to address the behaviors in front of the Mecca and she replied “yes.” But there was no return to working-together-for-downtown’s-public-safety during the two hours of patrons’ panegyrics to the Mecca and its owner. It was a missed opportunity for public safety discussion that we intend the parties will return to.

No Parking on-street Sundays 1-6 AM is coming soon. New signage in the downtown core will make one night a week available on a recurring basis for Public Works to remove snow or sweep gravel in the summer, continuing the upward trajectory of the city’s maintenance services in the core. Some will be caught up and towed by this initiative – but a grace period extending through the end of the year will see warnings citations under the wiper blade.
