Visit downtown Fairbanks and its environs on August 1 for several First Friday shows, including:
12PM @ Solstice Books — Downtown’s newest bookshop (located inside Gather at 721 2nd Avenue) kicks-off a month-long book drive for local Fairbanks schools. The goal is to encourage literacy in the classroom even with tightening budgets. Teachers are submitting book requests all month long and Solstice Books will be posting these “reading lists” at the store. Book lovers are encouraged to come in and buy a copy of a book for a school of their choice! The book will then be delivered to that classroom for the start of the school year.
4PM @ Humble Roots Beer Project — This August it’s all about the youth at Humble Roots! Their August First Friday gallery will showcase art from young creatives (all under 18) from in and around the Fairbanks area.
5PM @ 2 Street Gallery — Brianna Scott Waggoner is the featured artist for the month of August at 2 Street Gallery inside the Co-Op Plaza. Waggoner is making her debut within the Fairbanks art scene with her Alaskan-focused oil paintings.
5PM @ Bear Gallery in Pioneer Park — This August at The Bear Gallery, two exhibitions invite viewers to explore transformation through deeply personal relationships with nature, memory, and material. Meaning of River, by woodcarver Marianne Stolz, and Awkward Phase, by fashion designer and multimedia artist Sarah Dexter, each offer a distinct yet complementary perspective on growth, change, and the beauty found in transition. Learn more about their August exhibition at fairbanksarts.org.
5:30PM @ Fairbanks Children’s Museum — The Fairbanks Children’s Museum hosts their monthly “Kids’ Night In” First Friday event. On the first Friday of every month, the museum encourages First Friday attendees to drop their kiddos off at the museum for a pizza party and activities; freeing the adults up for a date night and a First Friday walkabout. The event is $30/per child, with members receiving a 10% discount. Kids must be at least 4 years old and potty trained.
6PM @ Fairbanks Community & Dog Mushing Museum — Beginning First Friday and running all August is the Alaska Baseball History Exhibit at the Fairbanks Community & Dog Mushing Museum. This exhibit features media related to the history of baseball in Alaska; a storied history which featured such future titans of the game including Mark McGwire and Hall-of-Famer Dave Winfield.
