Do you remember the Flood of ’67? Do you want to know more about it? Then come downtown for a special Flood of ’67 High Water Party hosted by Festival Fairbanks! The event is Tuesday, August 15th and will mark the event’s 50th anniversary.
The High Water Party will feature a ceremony with speakers and information about the history and science of the flood, its impact on Fairbanks and the nation. Community members will be invited to share their stories and memories. Several dignitaries will be in attendance including special guest Bill Walker, the Governor of Alaska.
The event will begin at 5PM with an opening reception complete with music and food vendors. At 6PM, speakers will discuss the event an unveil new historic and high water signage installed in downtown in August. Speakers at the event include:
- Jim Matherly, Fairbanks City Mayor
- Sally Stubech, FNSB Acting Mayor
- Carven Scott, National Weather Service Regional Director – Alaska Region
- Tim Feavel, COE Moose Creek Dam Manager
At 6:30, there will be a walking tour of the new signage as well as a retelling of flood stories. Afterward, there will be an ice cream social and a viewing of the Flood of ’67 display in the Fairbanks Community & Dog Musing Museum. Attendees who experienced the flood are invited to share the memories during the evening’s open mic event inside the museum!
The entire evening is free and open to the public.
