Original Sculptures
By Mary Ann Fortune
My Ravens have evolved through both my personal life’s journey and my appreciation of the intelligence and “sense of humor” of these birds.
Sharing the outdoor space with these very large, whimsical and extremely intelligent birds is a common part of any Alaskan’s day. I would be remiss if I did not admit to attaining a personal chuckle while watching a small number of ravens working together to create chaos in the back of a pickup truck using bags of garbage as the focal point of their treasure hunt. In listening to their different calls and ongoing communication with one another the range of dialect these birds have is amazing. On any given day, we have the opportunity to observe them play and interact in mid-air. I am extremely grateful to live in their midst.
My intentions are to convey the essence of the raven’s very whimsical and intelligent personality.
The initial stages of my sculptures are done using wood, metal and plaster. Their final layers of texture are done using an acrylic gel. It is in the final stages of the sculpture that the personality of the Raven is complete.
